CASE STUDY

Crystal Palace Football Club Academy Project.

The Project

ECF were appointed by Crystal Palace Football Club to undertake an engagement programme as part of the development plans for the future of their Academy on Copers Cope Road in Beckenham, London Borough of Bromley.

The scheme features major expansion and enhancement of the football facilities at the site – including a full-size covered pitch – to help meet increasing demand for its playing, training and education offering to more than 220 players.

The objective of ECF’s programme was to meaningfully engage with members of the local community on the Club’s proposed scheme and to encourage feedback from them prior to the submission of a planning application to Bromley Council.

Our role

In order to help maximise the scheme’s chances of success, activity included:

  • Multiple canvassing exercises with neighbours near the site in order to commence a two-way dialogue at an early stage and to identify any sticking points before wider consultation.
  • A public exhibition at the existing academy, featuring a presentation by Chairman of the club, Steve Parish.
  • Regular contact with political representatives in Bromley, including key members of the Development Control Committee, ward councillors and Cabinet Members.
  • A post-submission letter drop to residents and neighbours showing how the scheme has adapted as a result of feedback.

Outcomes

Having received 549 letters of support, members of Bromley Council’s Development Control Committee voted to grant planning permission for the scheme on Wednesday 18th March 2020.
