Kathy Jones, our Executive Chair, spoke in May at the launch of a new joint research paper from the Committee for Sydney, Property Council NSW and Business NSW. The paper and the event explore the government’s role in Innovation Districts and precincts more broadly.
Kathy has always advocated for collaboration across government, industry and the community to get the best outcome for the built environment.
This approach has even greater significance when discussing Precincts and the role of Government in them. Initially Governments need to act as enablers – taking early risk on assets, providing catalytic infrastructure and appropriate policy settings. They need to provide clarity and opportunity to the private sector so that the full economic potential of precincts can be harnessed. Kathy suggests that all precincts have a life cycle, and the importance of understanding the maturity a precinct has reached, is imperative to defining the roles of the different players. A Government committed to the success of an Innovation District will know when to step out of a decision-making role.
With her many years of experience Kathy called for the NSW Government to look at what Precincts can do for communities, industry, and the asset owners holistically so as to supercharge the economic benefit of Innovation Districts for the state of NSW.
As always, an inspiring and thought-provoking speech from our mentor, Kathy Jones.
